Christmas Chocolate Tubs 2026: How Much Smaller Are They Now?

Christmas Chocolate Tubs 2026: How Much Smaller Are They Now?

October 6, 2026
Share

Do you remember that feeling? Finding the tin of Quality Street on Christmas morning, putting your hand in and pulling out a chocolate. My grandmother used to keep hers all year round. I'd spot the tin, get really excited, put my hand in, and pull out her knitting. That wasn't good.

This year I went to my local Tesco to see what Christmas 2026 has in store. The short version: the tubs have shrunk again. Cadbury Roses and Heroes have dropped from 550g to 475g, a cut of about 14% in a single year, according to The Grocer.

As a chocolate maker, I wanted to dig into how we got here, why it keeps happening, and how to get the best value if you are buying a tub this Christmas.

What I found in the shops

Standing in the aisle with a Quality Street tub in my hands, the first thing that struck me was how small it has become. These just aren't what they were. You pay more and you get less.

Honestly, it takes your breath away when you see them stacked up at the end of the aisle. Pallet after pallet of purple, and you suddenly realise just how many they can fit on one now, because each tub is so tiny. Remember when one tin took up half the sideboard?

At this rate, I swear that within the next decade a Christmas tub of Quality Street will be the size of an actual paracetamol. One sweet, take with water, may cause disappointment.

And it isn't only the size. Have a look at the ingredients list on the back next time you pick one up, and see how far down the cocoa comes compared with the sugar and vegetable fats.

How big are the Christmas chocolate tubs in 2026?

Three of the big four have shrunk again this year, based on The Grocer's analysis of the major supermarkets.

Tub Christmas 2025 Christmas 2026 Change
Cadbury Roses 550g 475g down 75g
Cadbury Heroes 550g 475g down 75g
Celebrations 550g and 500g 500g only the 550g tub has gone
Quality Street 550g 550g no change this year

Quality Street's 2026 size is from the Sainsbury's website, checked on 6 October 2026. It held at 550g this year, after losing 50g last Christmas.

A lower shelf price doesn't always mean a better deal either. The Grocer found Tesco Clubcard shoppers are paying 2.1% more per kilo for the new 475g Roses and Heroes tubs than for last year's 550g ones, even though the sticker price went down.

How much have chocolate tins shrunk over the years?

Back in 2009, a tin of Roses held 975g and Quality Street was over a kilo. This Christmas, Roses and Heroes are 475g, less than half what they were. The metal tin has gone too, replaced by a plastic tub.

Tub Around 2009 Christmas 2026
Quality Street 1,100g 550g
Cadbury Roses 975g 475g
Cadbury Heroes 950g 475g
Celebrations 975g (2006) 500g

The shrinking has been noticed for years. In 2015 a shopper's photo of her Quality Street tins, collected over 20 years and getting steadily smaller, went viral across the national press.

Why are chocolate tubs getting smaller?

The makers' answer is rising costs. Poor cocoa harvests in West Africa, especially Ghana and the Ivory Coast, sent cocoa prices soaring, and the big brands shrank many lines in response. Which? found chocolate inflation hit 14.6% in the year to August 2025, the highest of any food category it tracked.

What surprised me is that this year's cuts came even as cocoa prices fell from their record highs. Once a tub has shrunk, it rarely grows back.

It isn't only size, either. Some big brands have cut the cocoa in certain products so far that they can no longer legally be called chocolate. As a chocolate maker, that's the part that bothers me most. Smaller tubs are one thing, but worse chocolate is another.

Which Christmas chocolate tub is the best value in 2026?

Ignore the sticker price and look at the price per 100g on the shelf label. With tubs now coming in 475g, 500g and 550g, that's the only fair way to compare them.

  • Check the small print. Supermarkets show the price per 100g or per kg under the main price.
  • Wait for the offers. Tubs go on promotion repeatedly in the run up to Christmas, so the price you see in October is rarely the lowest.
  • Compare shops. The Grocer found the same 475g Roses tub at £5.25 with Clubcard in Tesco and £6.50 in Sainsbury's.

A different kind of Christmas chocolate

I started Deliciously Guilt Free because my wife was diagnosed with gestational diabetes while she was pregnant, and we didn't want to give up sweet treats. Today we make zero added sugar chocolate here at Fare Acres Farm near Cambridge, ground from cacao beans in a traditional Swiss craft style, with no palm oil and no emulsifiers.

Too much of what's in a Christmas tub is chocolate-flavoured sugar. Ours is the opposite: we let the cacao sing.

If you're looking for a Christmas gift that tastes luxurious without the sugar, take a look at our no added sugar chocolate, or read why "sugar free" chocolate annoys me.

FAQ

How big is a tub of Roses in 2026?

475g in the major supermarkets, down from 550g at Christmas 2025.

How big is a tub of Quality Street in 2026?

550g, the same as last year. It was over a kilo in 2009.

Why are Christmas chocolate tubs getting smaller?

Manufacturers blame rising costs, especially cocoa after poor harvests in West Africa. This year's cuts came even though cocoa prices have fallen from their highs.

Which Christmas chocolate tub is the best value?

Compare the price per 100g, not the sticker price, and buy on promotion. Sizes now vary from 475g to 550g, so the cheapest tub isn't always the best deal.

"Goodbye Cadbury’s"

This chocolate bar is by far the best I have ever tasted and I was a cadburys girl through and through, but I’m happy to say goodbye forever now as not only will this chocolate not have all the sugar, it’s perfect for keto and diabetics, the orange comes through beautifully making the taste amazing and it’s a good size so you don’t need a lot to satisfy that craving, This is my firm favourite and I can’t wait till their back in stock and at 3 for 2 it’s worth every Penny. Well done Dan.

"Great chocolate"

Love this brand. Chocolate which doesn’t spike your blood sugar as long as you can resist eating a few squares only! Not easy! Beautiful taste, not too sweet and low sugar. Highly recommend.

"A life saver"

This is the best sugar free chocolate on the market and I cannot praise it enough. Being diabetic and on no meds,  I have to be super careful and this really is a delicious guilt free treat that doesn't spike my glucose levels at all.. I began by trying it and buying now and again but then realised that I would be much better off as a member, more choice and offers available too. Having my three bars delivered once a month means I have something there most of the time but as a member I can add to it if I want to on a Friday evening. That is when I usually order something special and truly indulgent like a Dubai Bar."

How wrong could I be?

I got these to try, thinking that they would just be a bland attempt at chocolate trying to draw in desperate diabetic chacahollics! How wrong could I be? Fantastic taste and texture and worth every penny. I'm so happy to have discovered KETO and will be a regular customer. The chocolate orange is the best ever and I'm looking forward to future new flavours being added. Give them a go. I'm certain you'll be impressed.

"The best keto chocolate"

My daughter is on a medical ketogenic diet but I haven't transitioned to keto with her.  My taste buds are therefore not keto diet adjusted which causes issues with most keto food alternatives but NOT this.  This chocolate has become part of my daily night time treat!  It's so creamy and doesn't have that keto sweetener taste I expected it to!  Also does not impact my daughters blood glucose and ketone levels negatively which is again not always the case!  Well done DGF
